Anatomy of a Website
Choose a Stage
Who are your Users?
If your answer is "people on the internet" then you have some work to do.
Identify Target Audience
Demographic Research
If you build a cool flashy website with a large complex navigation system in place, that might be super cool to you. But your grandma will hate it. And if you developed an e-commerce site for thimbles, then you might have a problem. With demographic research, you consider who your target market is, the commercial value of your product or service, and how you will reach that market. Consider who you want to use your website, then base the experience of the website around what will resonate with that demographic. Sometimes it's better to have half the users who value what your website has to offer rather than twice the users who simply eat your bandwidth and increase your bounce rate.
Building with the User in Mind
Once you have solidified your target user demographic, the web design and development can work towards the end goal. Sometimes the complexity of the website should be dialed back. Other times it's too simplistic, and won't work well for a sophisticated audience. The point being, after effectively targeting the type of user that you're building the website for, the success of the site will increase substantially.
